A Visual Journey Through South Asian Heritage: Art, Architecture & Mandalas
About this Event
Part One: Panel Discussion
Three short talks from visual art researchers offer accessible introductions to some of the most visually rich traditions in South Asian art history.
- Designing Slow Looking: Rethinking How We See Miniature Painting
Hira Jamshed, MA Creative and Cultural Industries, SOAS
South Asian miniatures were once held close and studied slowly, yet today we meet them framed on gallery walls. This talk asks how museums might display these intimate works more thoughtfully, and why ‘slow looking’ helps us truly see them.
- The Architecture of Hampi: Capital of the Vijayanagara Empire
Linshu Shen, MA History of Art and Archaeology, SOAS
Step into a South Indian city once richer than Rome and larger than London. Journey through Hampi's stunning ruins - from mortarless granite fortresses to temples guarded by stone beasts and elegant Indo-Islamic palaces. No prior history needed, just curiosity.
- Mandala: The Sacred Circle
Shanna Zhang, MA History of Art and Archaeology, SOAS
Born in the sacred traditions of South Asia, the mandala uses circles and symmetry to map the cosmos and the self. Discover the origins and meaning of these intricate designs in Hindu and Buddhist art, and the role they have played across centuries of devotion.
Part Two: Colouring & Temporary Tattoo Stickers
Pick up a colouring sheet and bring your own mandala to life with colour. No experience needed. We'll also have temporary tattoo stickers on the day for you to enjoy on the day or take home as a little piece of the afternoon.
