Join Camille Acker and Asali Solomon as they talk about A Very Special Episode through the lens of Black humor, from Fred Sanford to Paper Boi, at Tilt Institute for the Contemporary Image.
The afternoon will include 1990s sitcom trivia and an author book signing. Books will be sold by H& H Books and can be purchased in advance or the day of the event.
Camille Acker was raised in Washington, DC. She is the author of the critically acclaimed short story collection Training School for Negro Girls. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, Electric Literature, as an Audible Original, and in On Girlhood: 15 Stories from the Well-Read Black Girl Library. In 2022, she was named a Fellow by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. She is the Features and Interviews Editor for the film and visual culture journal, Seen, a publication of BlackStar Projects. Currently, she is the Writer-in-Residence at Temple University's MFA in Creative Writing program. Her latest book is the satirical novel, A Very Special Episode. She lives in Philadelphia, PA with her partner.
Asali Solomon’s latest novel, The Days of Afrekete, was called “a feat of engineering” by The New York Times. She is also the author of Disgruntled and Get Down: stories. She was the recipient of a Pew Fellowship, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award, and the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35” honor. Her work has appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine, Essence, McSweeney’s, and in several anthologies including The Best Short Stories of 2021: The O. Henry Prize Collection. She is the Bertrand K. Wilbur Chair in the Humanities at Haverford College where she directs Creative Writing and teaches fiction writing as well as literature of the African Diaspora.
