About this Event
What is this about?
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25th November, ‘The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’, and runs until 10th December, ‘Human Rights Day’.
The 16 Days of Activism is used as an organising strategy by individuals, organisations and groups around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls (VAWG).
Why is this important?
● 1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime.
● On average, 2 women are killed by a current or former partner each week.
● 93% of perpetrators in domestic abuse cases are male while 84% of victims
are female.
● In addition to the human cost, domestic abuse also has significant economic
implications, costing the UK an estimated £81billion a year.
The local picture
Croydon has the highest number of reported VAWG cases across all London Boroughs. The Council recently published a three years 'VAWG Delivery Plan' and will be hosting a number of activities during the 16 Days.
What are we doing to help
To support the 16 Days of Activism, and national government's policy to half VAWG in 10 years, Croydon Labour Group is organising its first open mic fundraiser event to help raise awareness of gender-based violence and unite the community on this very crucial matter.
We are thrilled to announce that the event will kickstart with special guest MP Alex Davies-Jones who's the Minister for Victims and Violence against women and girls.
Come and join us at this open mic fundraiser where victims, survivors and members of the
community will share their talents in a fun and creative way; through music, poetry, comedy, singing, dance & so much more - as we raise awareness and funds together to help Cassandra Centre charity meet its £15k goal to secure a safe space. To read more about the Cassandra Centre, click here:
