A Taste of Forlorn Hope
About this Event
Join us for a very special tasting featuring five wines from Forlorn Hope Winery!
At Forlorn Hope Winery, they love longshots and underdogs.
Maybe, you’ve herd of Hans Brinker, the Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the dike? They’re big fans of his. Or maybe you’re familiar with the ‘Band of Brothers’ speech Henry V gave at the battle of Agincourt when hope was few and peril certain? It’s basically a great pep talk for his soldiers who were seriously outnumbered. If you visit Forlorn Wineries’ website, these are the role models whose ideals they honor.
They admire tenacity, relish a challenge and (self-admittedly) love a good tussle. Forlorn Hope (from the Dutch ‘verloren hoop’, meaning ‘lost troop’) was the name given to a group of soldiers who volunteered to lead the charge. Glory is guaranteed while success is slim for the ‘forlorn hope’. It is with this ideology that Matthew Rorick founded Forlorn Hope in 2005. The wines represent their self-described ‘rush into the breach’.
The winery uses wines grown at the Rorick Heritage Vineyard (RHV). RHV sits on 75 acres in the Sierra Foothills of Calaveras County, California. Each wine is crafted organically and features unconventional and under-represented grape varieties. They are produced in small batches that are an authentic representation of the vineyard’s alpine environment and limestone soil. They are beautifully aromatic, offer textural presence and feature bright and natural acidity. All wines are produced with native yeast, only; and never new oak. Sulphur is used sparingly and is specific to each wine. The vineyard provides grapes to 19 other small, local wineries.
