In 1963, curator Walter Hopps—later the Menil Collection’s founding director—organized Marcel Duchamp’s first retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum. A new book by Don Quaintance, "Duchamp in California: Walter Hopps Curates a Retrospective," 2025, revisits this landmark exhibition. In this lecture, Quaintance considers how the show reshaped Duchamp’s legacy and energized the Los Angeles art scene.
