We start our tale of two houses at the palatial Spencer House which is a rare survivor of the great aristocratic palaces that once adorned London. It was built between 1756-66 by the first Lord and Lady Spencer. Overlooking Green Park, the spectacular State Rooms have hosted the social, political, and cultural elite of many generations.
Extensive restoration was undertaken between 1985-1994 and our exclusive group can once again experience the Georgian splendour of this magnificent building.
In the afternoon we take a short journey to an early 19th century townhouse at Brompton Square in Kensington. Purchased by Gavin, 2nd Lord Faringdon as his London home. This house is a complete contrast to the Palladian formality of the family seat Buscot in Oxfordshire.
Highlights in this house include an amusing trompe l’oeil mural commissioned from Roy Hobdell by Lord Faringdon and features friends in the guise of classical statues. There are important examples of Biedermeier furniture and a collection of pictures by contemporary artists.
Furthermore, the four principal reception rooms have been sumptuously decorated by the award-winning designer Alidad.
