Plagued by debt and salacious gossip, Blanche Dubois has been forced to relinquish her ownership of Belle Reve, the family home and plantation, and flee to her sister’s home in New Orleans. Shocked by the stark accommodation and the rough neighbourhood, Blanche tries desperately to cling on to her fantasy of being a “southern belle” surrounded by gentlemen callers.
Her brother-in-law, Stanley, soon sees through her façade and makes his contempt fairly obvious. Blanche is both repelled by, and attracted to his blatant masculinity.
Desperate for one more gentleman caller to help restore her position in the world, her tenuous hold on sanity is gradually eroded by the stories of her less than ladylike past that have followed her even as far as New Orleans.
Is Blanche a victim, or a perpetrator of the events that lead to the final denouement?
