April 30th 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. As time passes we often forget the sacrifices that so many made in the name of freedom. A Step to Remember is a way to honor those that sacrificed so much and paid the ultimate price in the name of freedom.On Wednesday April 30th 2025 I will be walking 58,276 steps, a step for every name etched into the black granite of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, also known simply as The Wall. Once completed another 1,575 steps will be taken for those still missing or unaccounted for. The first name is from 1959 and the last name is from 1975. This represents 17 years of losses our nation, their families, and their friends suffered. I will be wearing a 17-pound weighted vested during the walk to be symbolic of the weight this war bore on our nation.
A Step to Remember will begin at 0700 CST in Veterans Park located just south of Birmingham in Alabaster, AL. I would love to have you join me for all 59,851 steps possible. If for some reason you are unable to participate in the entire distance that's okay. Choose a year or several years and walk a step for the name of each hero that lost their life during that year. Participate as a relay and complete as much as you can as a team. In person or virtual, the options are many but the goal in doing this event is to remind the nation of the accountability of all POW/MIA while honoring the memory of those killed in action.
This is not a sanctioned event and there are no registration fees however I ask that if you join me on the walk, whether it is in person or virtually, you donate whatever you feel is right to participate. 100% of all proceeds received will go to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Buy a Mile (https://www.vvmf.org/The-Wall-That-Heals/) program that helps to support The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that is located in Washington, D.C.. In 2024 over 19,500 miles were traveled (15,000 over land and 4,500 over water). 2025 kicks off the 30th Season of The Wall That Heals. The travels will begin on 06 March in Sebring, Florida and will visit 31 communities during the year. Donations can be made via the website link.
