A Special Fall Hike: The Wonderful Woodrat

Edgewood is home to the wonderful, friendly, dusky-footed woodrat (Neotoma fuscipes). This interesting creature is a busy builder. Maybe you have seen some of those stick houses along the trails? Are they all occupied? Who lives in them? What is the story of the woodrat? Why is it also called a packrat? And what is this you hear about them not being a rat at all? Come learn all about them on this hike.

Join Friends of Edgewood docents for this free fall hike at Edgewood Park and Natural Preserve. We’ll cover about 3 miles at a moderate pace and make frequent stops to talk about dusky-footed woodrats and why they are considered a keystone species.

This hike is suitable for both children and adults interested in learning more about nature and wildlife at Edgewood, but we suggest kids ages 6 and up due to the length of the walk.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Consider sunscreen, a hat, and snacks. Restrooms and water are available only at the picnic area near the Sylvan Trailhead. Please plan ahead. Note that Edgewood’s many narrow trails cannot accommodate strollers.

All participants, including children, must be registered individually and have approved the liability waiver through Eventbrite. Details on where to meet will be emailed to participants before the event.

We will still hike in light showers, but a heavy downpour cancels this hike.

Group size is very limited. Please cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend so others may have a chance to join us.
