A Slide Presentation: "What's Ms. Pinney Doing Here?"
About this Event
What’s Ms. Pinney Doing Here?” A Slide Presentation
This slide talk on Melissa Ann Pinney’s residency with Chicago Public School students (2019-2026) presents answers to the question, “What’s Ms. Pinney doing here?”, as a high school student asked Ms. Pinney last year. Pinney intends her portraits to honor and to recognize the radiant young people in our public schools, especially those seldom represented.
The images bear witness to everyday moments of life at school. The teens collaborate in the art-making by welcoming Ms.Pinney into their world. She never knows what the students will do next; their beauty, their compassion and their conflicts are unrehearsed. Over time, the project has deepened into a narrative of identity, community and urgent social issues.
Ms. Pinney has come to appreciate the meaning this project holds for herself and for the students themselves, who tell her they feel truly seen by their participation.
This Presentation is part of Leica Gallery Chicago's ongoing series:
On Photography
A Series of Talks by Women in Photography
Each month, Leica Chicago will present On Photography, a speaker series highlighting the voices of women working in photography. Featuring artists, curators, publishers, gallerists, educators, and other professionals, the series celebrates the breadth of talent and leadership women bring to the medium. Through personal stories, presentations, and professional insights, each speaker will offer a unique perspective on photography's history, its role in contemporary culture, and its future.
