Popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these unique pieces of shell art were often brought home by sailors as gifts for loved ones. A sailor’s valentine was typically an octagon-shaped box filled with intricately arranged sea shells, of varying sizes, glued into place. But contrary to popular belief, sailors didn’t make them. Most were created by craftsmen in the West Indies and sold in souvenir shops. Participants in the workshop will learn the history of these one-of-a-kind pieces and create their own simple design just in time for Valentine’s Day.
