The Cathedral Cultural Series proudly presents a rare and transcendent musical experience: a concert performance of the Requiem by Eustache du Caurroy, one of the most exquisite and solemn masterpieces of Renaissance sacred music.
Composed in the early 17th century by du Caurroy, court composer to King Henri IV of France, this Requiem stands as a poignant testament to the grandeur and spiritual depth of French polyphony. Its serene counterpoint and modal harmonies evoke a profound sense of reverence and timeless beauty. For centuries, it was sung at the funerals of French monarchs.
This performance features Schola Cantorum Detroit, under the direction of Dr. Horst Buchholz, Director of Sacred Music at the Cathedral. The ensemble will offer audiences a glimpse into the solemnity and grace of early French funeral rites.
Why Attend?
• Experience a rarely performed gem of Renaissance sacred music
• Immerse yourself in the contemplative beauty of modal polyphony
• Witness the revival of a forgotten masterwork in the resplendent setting of our Cathedral
• Join us for an afternoon where music becomes prayer, and history breathes anew through the voices of today
