A Republic, Can We Keep It? with Catherine Rampell and Paul Krugman
About this Event
This event is a fundraiser for The Berkshire Eagle Local Journalism Fund, created to enhance our reporting for arts and culture, economic development, education and healthcare.
When we talk about the health of a democracy, few issues are as corrosive, or as deeply misunderstood, as political corruption. It chips away at public trust, distorts the free market, and reshapes policy to favor the few over the many. But what does modern corruption actually look like? Is it a matter of backroom cash deals, or is it woven directly into the legal and economic frameworks of our government?
To help us untangle these massive questions, we are joined today by two of the most sharp-witted and influential economic commentators writing today.
Paul Krugman is an emeritus professor of economics at Princeton University. In 2008, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for his theory on international trade. He is a bestselling author, and former New York Times columnist. Throughout his distinguished career, he has authored or edited 20 books and published more than 200 scholarly articles. Today, he writes a widely read Substack newsletter analyzing economics, public policy and current events. He also maintains a second home in southern Berkshire County.
Catherine Rampell is an award-winning journalist, commentator and television host. She was one of the youngest nationally syndicated columnists for The Washington Post before joining MS NOW as co-anchor of The Weekend: Primetime. Earlier in her career, she covered economics for The New York Times. She has been recognized with the 2021 Online Journalism Award for Commentary and the 2010 Weidenbaum Center Award for Evidence-Based Journalism, and is a six-time finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award, one of journalism’s highest honors. She maintains a home in central Berkshire County.
