Preservation as Innovation
Architect Leo Marmol draws on decades of experience restoring modernist landmarks in a candid conversation about where historic preservation is failing and how it must evolve. Preservation as Innovation addresses the disconnect between traditional preservation frameworks and the urgent realities of a rampant housing crisis. Marmol argues that preservation must move beyond procedural nostalgia to new systems that embrace sustainability and community needs. Instead of encasing historic sites in amber, Marmol proposes preservation as innovation: a forward-thinking practice that protects meaning by making heritage relevant in the present tense.
About Leo Marmol/Marmol Radziner
Leo Marmol, FAIA, is Managing Partner of Marmol Radziner, the design-build firm he co-founded with Ron Radziner in 1989. With offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, the practice integrates architecture, construction, interiors, landscape, and fabrication. Known for restoring modernist landmarks such as Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House and works by Albert Frey, R.M. Schindler, and John Lautner, recent projects include a Beverly Hills mixed-use complex with the historic Saks Fifth Avenue building and the restoration of William Pereira’s Firestone estate. Marmol holds a Bachelor of Architecture with a Minor in Philosophy from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
