Our April installation, hosted by Huntsville Botanical Garden, invites you to explore the beauty of the natural world during National Garden Month through photography, poetry, and personal experience.
Join us in our Artist Dining Hall as we welcome Herb Lewis, a dedicated nature enthusiast who has transformed his own backyard into a thriving wildlife sanctuary and helped shape birding trails across North Alabama; Grace Dellis, a poet whose words reflect on grief, healing, queerness, womanhood, and the natural world; Joe Hendrickson, a photographer whose work captures faith, family, and community through a lens of natural beauty; and Drew Stewart, the steward of The Orion’s blossoming Sustainability program.
Following the featured speakers, guests are invited to share their own reflections in an open-mic session—whether through poetry, prose, or spoken word.
Come cultivate inspiration, connection, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Herb Lewis, Nature Enthusiast
Since retiring, Herb Lewis has dedicated himself to landscaping, birding, and photography. Over the past 20 years, he has channeled his knowledge and experience into creating a natural wildlife habitat within his own backyard garden to attract native and migrating birds. Herb shares his success and techniques for attracting birds through presentations, workshops and training events. His birding interest has expanded into the establishment of the Lewis Birding Trail and Lewis Bird Watch at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Herb also assisted the Land Trust of North Alabama in developing a bird viewing facility at their Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve.
Grace Dellis, Poet
Grace Dellis is a mother, a Montessorian, and a poet; she has been writing and publishing poetry for over two decades. Her work has been featured in various journals, anthologies, and podcasts, and she has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Grace has two poetry chapbooks available through Bottlecap Press and serves on the Board of Out Loud Huntsville. Her work, generally free verse or pantoum, explores themes spanning religion and deconstruction, grief and healing, parenthood and queerness, and womanhood and the natural world. With a degree in Rhetoric and a career in education, poetry is both a creative outlet for Grace and a way of making sense of a world that often feels senseless. She is happy to be here.
Joe Hendrickson, Photographer
Joe Hendrickson has called Huntsville, Alabama home since 1987. His extensive travel experiences have broadened his view of the world, and his photography translates a distinct passion for Faith, Family, and Community. His emphasis on natural beauty delivers a thought-provoking visual concept and transposes it from his view to your own.
Drew Stewart, Orion Sustainability Manager, Spoken Word
Drew Stewart serves as The Orion Amphitheater’s Sustainability Manager. Graduating from Texas Christian University in 2021 with a B.S. in Environmental Policy and Sustainability, Drew manages The Orion's on-site Artist Garden intentional wildlife spaces on the property. He has volunteered as a naturalist to educate people across Alabama through the Land Trust of North Alabama, City of Huntsville, and Alabama State Parks System. He is currently working to establish a market garden, including a native prairie micro-habitat, on his homestead in South Huntsville. Drew's inspiration for everything sustainability is drawn from an innate captivation with the natural world and a drive to save it.
