About this Event
Peace in our time. In the aftermath of the legendary Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a new sense of triumph pervaded European culture and led to a profusion of celebratory works commemorating this epic sea battle. Countless musical works were composed to memorialize this historical event, and art historian Ian Fenlon argues that Lepanto was the catalyst that inaugurated the Baroque Era.
It is more than likely that Jacobus de Kerle intended his magnificent Missa Da pacem Domine, published in 1583 during the aftermath of the Battle of Lepanto, as a commemoration of this important victory. Join Musica Transalpina as we present the first known complete performance of this mass setting in modern times on St. Andrew's Day: Saturday November 30, 2024 at 7 P. M.
The ethereal votive antiphon Da pacem, Domine, here in square notation.
In the first two lines above, one may see how De Kerle wonderfully sets the antiphon Da pacem, Domine as the cantus firmus for his eponymous mass setting. Come hear us bring this music to life on St. Andrew's Day!
