About this Event
Kulturkanonen presents the first ever public reading of Hannah Rae’s ‘A Man Called Paris’!
A Man Called Paris is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ centered on the character of Paris. Paris returns to his home Verona where the Lord and Lady Capulet have called upon him to marry their daughter Juliet. However while disembarking the train non-stop from Versailles, Paris falls in love with the mysterious ward of the Montagues, Sir Grant. The couple hatch a treacherous plot to run off together amidst the violent turmoil of the old family squabbles.
’A Man Called Paris’ gently adapts Shakespeaer’s vision to comport the original narrative into a queer, irreverent, emotional story about the struggle of LGBTQIA+ people in patriarchal homogeny. By utilizing the initial structure and character arcs while adding plot contrivances similar to that of a modern romantic comedy with high farce, Paris’ journey becomes an elastic exploration of oppression for a new generation.
