A Look Back in Time - Share Your Torrington Holiday Memories!

Everyone has a favorite holiday story. We want to hear it.

For our last program of 2024, we are inviting you to join us and others in the community to look back on the many Torrington memories of the holiday season. Torrington, with its rich immigrant history, has multiple layers of traditions -- some deeply embedded in familial cultural roots while others shaped by popular trends of more recent decades, all helping to create a medley of diverse perspectives and experiences!

Maybe you’ll share…..

· What holidays you celebrate and how your family’s heritage influences how you celebrate.

· A recipe that has passed down through your family for generations or a favorite dish you could not live without at your holiday table.

· The stores and businesses that were a part of your holiday recollections, where you shoppped for presents or for food, the store windows that held that special toy or decoration....Was it Mertz, Caldor, Stars, Woolworths or the local family store on the corner?

· How music plays a part in your celebrations – special songs, concerts or musical instruments you or family members play?

· What special outings did you and your family take to help celebrate the season?

The possibilities are endless.

All we ask is that what you share has a Torrington connection and the memory is kept short - about 2-3 minutes max so that we can hear as many experiences as possible. If you have an object or two or a photo that helps to tell your story, please bring it! We want this to be a fun, informative and celebratory get together.

How will this work?

Once you know what you’d like to share with the group, drop us a note at [email protected] with a short sentence describing what you’d like to share, such as “I’d like to talk about going to Mertz at in the 1960’s during the holidays”. You don’t need to send your whole story. This way we can loosely organize the event around common topics. We really want this to be an open forum for both those in the community who want to share something or those who prefer just to listen.

Please note that visitors to this event may be photographed, videotaped, or otherwise recorded as we wish to capture all the recollections from the evening. By visiting, visitors grant the Torrington Historical Society permission to use photographs and/or audiovisual recordings in which visitors appear for archival, documentary, publicity, advertising, or other purposes.
