In the heart of Cincinnati stands one of the most intact 19th-century brewing sites in America — the former Bruckmann Brewery complex. Founded in 1856 and operated for nearly a century by the Bruckmann family, the brewery once thrived as part of the city’s rich German brewing tradition. Today, its brewhouse, malthouse, bottling plant, stables, family home, power plant, and vast underground lagering cellars remain as rare survivors of a bygone industrial era.This documentary uncovers the layered history of the site — from its early days producing lager beer, through its post-Prohibition decline and closure in 1950, to its unexpected second life as the home of the Fountain Winery and later the Worthmore Food Products Company, famous for Cincinnati-style chili and mock turtle soup.
At the heart of the film is the inspiring preservation effort led by the Brewing Heritage Trail. Through careful restoration and determined advocacy, this non-profit organization is transforming the long-closed complex into a public heritage destination — opening doors that have been sealed for decades and inviting visitors into the brewery buildings and the remarkable underground lagering cellars.
Blending history, architecture, and community preservation, this film tells the story of a landmark brought back to life — and the people working to ensure Cincinnati’s brewing legacy is not forgotten.
