The Sharon is thrilled to present A League of Her Own, an original one-woman play written and devised by Allison Price, Abby Ferree, and Jonah Fujikawa. This new play, staring Dani Treviño and directed by Jordan Gregson (Significant Production's Literary and Casting Associate), will be presented as you've never seen theater at The Sharon before. Upon arrival, our helpful ushers will scan your ticket and direct you to select a seat on the stage. All seating will be general admission, as you will be traveling through backstage to end up in Sam's apartment for a truly immersive theater experience.
Prepare to step in to the life of Sam during this unique, powerful, and at times emotional glimpse into a world that too many women are forced to live with every day. According to stalkingawareness.org, 1 in 3 women experience stalking at some point in their lives, with 11% of cases lasting 5 or more years. Approximately 48% of sexual assault survivors also experienced stalking prior to their assault. In 3 out of every 4 cases where women were murdered by an intimate partner, there was documented stalking in the year before her death.
Reviewer Justin M. West wrote:
"Theatre doesn't have to be comfortable, especially if the subject of a piece of art is itself painful. Steven Spielberg didn't talk to the camera at the beginning of Schindler's List and tell you that you might wanna close your eyes at certain parts. Don't expect a director of a play to do it, either. Know what you're getting into.
To quote the great Hunter S. Thompson, "You buy the ticket. You take the ride."
No show I have seen has better exemplified the correct approach to this than A League of Her Own, the most recent production from Bottle Alley in tandem with Just Friends. This show has seriously stuck with me in a way that few have, challenging preconceptions that over an hour I came to learn were egregiously wrong.
The show was successful in that effort only because it handled difficult subject matter in the best way possible. League trusts its audience's maturity. While giving some notice to allow an informed decision, I sincerely respect the company's choice not to give too much away, not to hold the audience's hands and pat their heads. Rather than give us one last chance to "sneak out," the company advises us before opening the doors, "You can leave, but if you decide to, you can't go back in." This was, in my view, a very mature way of saying, "This is going to be hard to watch… but you need to." And you do."
