Oakville Galleries invites you to experience one of the most beloved works in our permanent collection with Janet Cardiff’s immersive outdoor audio walk, A Large Slow River.
Commissioned in 1999 and recorded live on-site at Gairloch Gardens, A Large Slow River responds directly to the landscape, creating a unique sensory experience that encourages visitors to slow down, observe, and listen closely.

Time: Drop in between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM
Location: 1306 Lakeshore Road East, Oakville, ON
Capacity: 13 participants, first come, first served
After the walk, visitors are welcome to linger in the gardens, enjoy the summer weather, purchase light refreshments from local vendors as part of The Art of Refreshment, and visit Oakville Galleries’ current exhibition.
MP3's provided. Headphones and audio equipment are available to borrow from the front desk. Visitors are also welcome to use their own headphones, with Bluetooth compatibility available.

Janet Cardiff’s A Large Slow River is an outdoor audio walk that includes outdoor pathways, garden terrain, and stairs, and may not be fully accessible for all visitors. Visitors with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact Oakville Galleries in advance so our staff can provide more information and discuss possible accommodations.
Terms of Service
By registering for this program, participants agree to the following:
- This is a free, drop-in program offered on a first come, first served basis.
- Capacity is limited to 13 participants at a time due to the availability of gallery audio equipment.
- Participants must check in at the main gallery reception upon arrival. Staff will provide instructions before the audio walk begins.
- Headphones and audio equipment are available to borrow from the front desk. Visitors are also welcome to use their own headphones, with Bluetooth compatibility available.
- Visitors borrowing gallery equipment must leave valid identification, such as a health card or driver’s licence, at reception for the duration of the walk. Identification will be returned once all borrowed equipment is returned.
- All borrowed equipment must be returned to reception immediately after completing the audio walk. Participants may be responsible for any lost, damaged, or unreturned equipment.
- The audio walk takes place outdoors in Gairloch Gardens. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather.
- The route includes outdoor pathways, garden terrain, and stairs, and may not be fully accessible for all visitors. Visitors with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact Oakville Galleries in advance for more information.
- The program may be delayed, paused, or cancelled in the case of heavy rain, thunderstorms, extreme weather, or unsafe conditions.
- Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- Participants are asked to be respectful of the gardens, artworks, gallery property, staff, and other visitors.
- Oakville Galleries reserves the right to refuse participation or end participation for anyone who does not follow staff instructions or program guidelines.
