About this Event

We are pleased to invite PGTS, PGRs, ECRs and those interested in embarking on research in any aspect of early modern Scottish studies, to attend the University of Glasgow’s new interdisciplinary research symposium, being held on Thursday 11th of June 2026 at the Glasgow University Union (GUU).

This one-day symposium is designed for those with an interest in any aspect of early modern Scotland, providing a fresh, supportive, cross-disciplinary research environment. It brings together some of the leading scholars of seventeenth‑century Scotland, including Professor Karin Bowie (University of Glasgow), Dr Allan Kennedy (University of Dundee), Associate Professor Janay Nugent (University of Lethbridge), Dr Aonghas MacCoinnich (University of Glasgow), Professor Alasdair Raffe (University of Edinburgh), Professor Laura Stewart (University of York), Dr Margaret Stewart (University of Edinburgh), Dr John Young (University of Strathclyde), and Dr Theo van Heijnsbergen (University of Glasgow), as well as other notable names expected to join the programme.

The day will begin with an interactive palaeography workshop, open to all attendees. This will be followed by a fast‑paced five‑minute pitching session, where selected presenters will pitch research ideas to our academic panel and receive constructive, collegial feedback, while other attendees are invited to listen and engage with the discussion. Ideas will range from research monographs, articles, to new taught course concepts and early‑stage doctoral/postdoctoral projects, all covering seventeenth-century Scottish studies. The day will close with an academic roundtable, offering insight into key thematic questions and the emerging research agendas shaping the future of the field.
