About this Event
Native Michigander Rick Sperling portrays a multitude of characters in this one-man play about his mother’s journey through memory care. Sperling, an award-winning playwright, director and actor, is best known for founding and leading the internationally acclaimed Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit from 1992 to 2019.
In A Joyride in Memory Care, we see Sperling witness his dynamic mother Doris – a trailblazing teacher, youth and arts advocate and educational reformer – lose her once powerful voice to the devastation wrought by dementia. Yet, in the midst of this trauma, Sperling discovers deep beauty, dignity and humor among these incredible people living out their last days in a brave new world.
This performance is for anyone who:
- Wants to learn more about dementia and how it affects our community
- Has been personally affected by dementia and wants to connect with others
- Enjoys high-quality, entertaining theater
- Is interested in social impact theater
What to Expect
This event is open to the whole community, but there will be a special emphasis on dementia friendliness.
There will be volunteers available to provide assistance to anyone who wants it, starting with our curbside greeters, who will wait with guests while the driver parks the car.
Free respite care will be available just down the hall from the performance space. Professional caregivers and trained volunteers will be waiting to spend time with those living with dementia who don't wish to sit through the whole performance or discussion.
Light refreshments will be provided after the performance. For those that are interested, there will be a discussion about dementia and our culture's response to it after the show.
This event is FREE to attend. Due to limited seating, registration is required. If you or your loved one plan to take advantage of the free respite care, please choose that add-on option to help up properly prepare.
This event is proudly funded by the Jackson Community Foundation, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Dementia Friendly Services, Jackson County Medical Care Facility, and the United Center for Caring. Donations are appreciated.
