About this Event

The Scottish Public Law Group are delighted to invite you to a free evening event; “A Human Rights Based Approach: Theory and Practice”, which will take place on Tuesday the 24th of February from 17:30 – 19:00 at the University of Edinburgh’s David Hume Tower lecture theatre and online.

Kasey MacCall-Smith, Professor of International Law and Human Rights, will chair a panel of distinguished academics and practitioners, who will explore the application of ‘human rights-based approaches’ in public law and public services in Scotland.

Colm O'Cinneide is a Professor of Constitutional and Human Rights Law at University College London and a leading author in both Constitutional and Human Rights law. He has advised the Joint Committee on Human Rights at the UK Parliament and previously served as a member of the European Committee on Social Rights of the Council of Europe.

His work centres on the themes of administrative justice and legal culture, and he has recently conducted research on the Scottish Social Security system, observing the implementation of the ‘human rights-based principles’ embedded in the Social Security (Scotland) Act 2018.

Suzanne Tanner KC has an extensive practice in Scottish public law, chaired independent investigations and reviews, sit as a tribunal judge and had involvement in various public inquiries and will discuss the human rights and trauma informed approaches taken across a range of such settings.

This event is eligible for 1.5 hours of authorised CPD and will be followed by a short drinks reception. Booking in advance is essential.
