Presented by Craig PfannkucheWilliam B. Ogden, in building his Chicago, St. Paul and Fond du Lac railroad from Chicago into central Wisconsin planned to make Janesville his headquarters. He did much fundraising to build that line in and around Janesville. That plan was altered when, because of the Panic of 1857, in 1859 the new Chicago and North Western railroad took over the Fond du Lac line. Nevertheless, Janesville would still play a large role in the financial success of the C&NW in the following 135 years. Craig will discuss the symbiotic relationship between the city and the railroad in those years providing documents, maps and photographs in support of his presentation.
