A new event intended for home-educated children aged between 5 and 15. This tour will follow a similar format to our long-established programme of school visits and help children improve their knowledge of the Victorian era.Starting at 10.30am in the Guardroom, this tour will introduce attendees to historical events that resulted in the improvement of Britain's Defences. Advances in technology, urbanisation, domestic and foreign policy and construction methods are all covered here.
In our museum display, the group will experience the everyday living conditions for the soldiers garrisoned at Crownhill. Objects from the period will bring history to life.
Our collection of historic artillery will further enhance attendees' understanding of the Industrial Revolution and the pace of change in the late 19th century. This part of the visit will include practical demonstrations of innovative designs.
After a break for lunch (not provided, please bring your own) the group will venture below ground to discover areas of the Fort dedicated to defence. Tour guides will highlight new technologies and improvements over previous generations of Fortification.
The tour will conclude with firing of a Georgian Field Gun on the Parade Ground. This is often a talking point several days after a visit to Crownhill Fort and is a great way to embed the learning on the day.
This tour is only open to home-educated children and their accompanying adults. Numbers are limited and places must be booked in advance. See our website for further details.
