One performer. Eight characters.
Step into a moving theatrical debate on the supposed “greatness” of war — and the courage of peace.
The performance opens with a reenactment of Peter Schumann’s A Man Says Goodbye to His Mother, a piece created in response to the Vietnam War, which still resonates today.
From there, one performer takes on eight distinct characters, inspired by the extraordinary story of Archibald Baxter, a conscientious objector who refused to fight during World War I. Each character brings their own perspective on courage, duty, sacrifice, violence, and resistance.
Through masks, clown, bouffon, poetry, music, and physical storytelling, the characters tell their side of the story — inviting us to question the stories we tell ourselves about war and peace.
What are the hidden costs of war?
Can war ever truly be called great?
And what does it mean to stand by your convictions when those in power demand otherwise?
The shows will be Friday, Nov 13th and Saturday, Nov 14th at 7pm at the Apocalypse Parlor, 21 Young Rd, Weaverville.
On Sunday, Nov 15th, we will be hosting a Theater of Liberation workshop based on the work of Paolo Freire and Augusto Boal, using games to unpack or thoughts, feelings and relationship to power. 2-4:30pm at the Dr. Wesley Grant Community Center.
