June 19th • 4:30 PM–6:00 PM
Special Art opening
Wine & Cheese Reception
A Gathering of the Tribes is the brainchild and vision of the late artistic legend of the Lower East Side, Steve Cannon, and the artists, writers, and musicians he inspired. The exhibition features a special installation and tribute to legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins that includes reflections from one of his final recorded interviews as part of an exploration of The Beautiful Migration—artists who moved between New York City and Woodstock.
The art of Simi Sernaker, also known as Simi Stone, and the work of Yolène LeGrand explore Caribbean heritage amid the abstract and the political.
Also, in the YES gallery, the exhibit highlights artwork and writings by students from New York schools, including the High School of Design, in Voices Carve the Sky, our Juneteenth Youth Voices initiative.
Featured throughout the exhibit are poetry and writings from Issue 11 of A Gathering of the Tribes.
The event,s sponsored by the Juneteenth Advisory Board and WAAM, is free to the public.
