On November 2, at 6:35 a.m., in the very center of Athens, number 6 on S Street collapses, causing the partial collapse of number 8. Police officers on duty in E Square report an explosion.
The Grand Square opens with this fictional event, inspired by the collapse that occurred in Marseille, France, in 2018.
The film chronicles the consequences of the collapse and the different narratives it gives rise to: the official account, the counter-investigation, and the theories shared in the streets at night. Particular attention is paid to the unfolding of the counter-investigation, inspired by the methods of Forensic Architecture. The film ends before we learn what actually happened. Instead, we join a traditional shadow-theatre performance in an abandoned quarry on the hillside. The struggle for the truth may remain unresolved, what endures are the collective experience and the counter-stories we shared.
Pauline Rouzet is a French artist who graduated from ENSAD in Paris, and has been living in Athens since 2024, where she is currently studying in the master's programme at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Pauline works with photos and films to explore the concept of narrative, onformed by her work with the Forensic Architecture team in Athens.
