About this Event
What happens when a classic exploration of female agency is trapped in the unforgiving world of a life simulation game?
Chronic Insanity presents a groundbreaking, in-person production of Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece, A Doll’s House, reimagined through the lens of The Sims videogame franchise. Set in the cutting-edge Virtual & Immersive Production Studio (VIP) at The University of Nottingham, this is theatre for the digital age, designed to engage both dedicated theatre-goers and digital audiences.
This production will explore themes of female agency and societal restrictions, asking: how much control can Nora truly have when her decisions are being premeditated by unseen forces?
What to Expect:
- Game Mechanics on Stage: Experience Nora’s life as a player-controlled character, exploring how this game structure mirrors real-world societal restrictions.
- A Modern Adaptation: A newly adapted, 30–60 minute script incorporates the use of Simlish language, some pre-written and some improvised by the performers.
- Cutting-Edge Captions: Witness dynamic, creative captions inspired by the iconic, colourful Plumbobs (gems) that follow Sim characters. These captions will track the characters around the stage, exploring a new, accessible way to integrate captioning into performance.
Join us for a provocative, innovative take on a classic that explores the limits of freedom when the rules are rigged.
