Avalanche Party
Während der Pandemie war Avalanche Party-Frontmann Jordan Bell in der Vorhölle eines Proberaums in einem Industriegebiet in Darlington eingesperrt, in dem keine Band proben durfte. Mit Permanent-Marker schrieb er sich täglich DER TRAUM ÜBER ALLES auf den linken Arm: „The dream above all else“. Inspiriert von David Lynchs Catching the Big Fish - dem Buch des Filmemachers mit mundgerechten Betrachtungen über Vorstellungskraft, Meditation und die Macht des Traums - diente Bells tägliche Tätowierung als aufrüttelnder Slogan, eine Bestätigung seiner Hingabe, ein trotziges, kreatives Leben zu führen, wie prekär es auch sein mag, scheinbar am Arsch der Welt festzusitzen. Das zweite Album von Avalanche Party, das gerade bei AMK, dem alternativen Musik-Imprint der Kartel Music Group, unter Vertrag genommen wurde, soll im November 2024 veröffentlicht werden: Der Traum Über Alles. Würde man sich mit der LP auf die Couch eines Psychoanalytikers setzen, könnten die Themen Blutrausch, Subversion und Verbrennung auf eine schwere Ladung aufgestauter Aggressionen hindeuten, die zur Explosion gebracht werden. Besonders die erste Hälfte des Albums fühlt sich wie ein klanglicher Exorzismus an: ein okkulter Urschrei des 21. Jahrhunderts, der vom rasenden New Wave von „Nureyev Said it Best“ und „Shake the Slack“ zur berauschenden Kriegstrommel-Darbietung von „Serious Dance Music“ und „Collateral Damage“ übergeht. Der Traum Über Alles“ hämmert und verführt: Das elegante ‚Ecstasy‘ hat eine Zärtlichkeit, die allmählich in die Instabilität kippt, als ob Bell sich einer Geliebten am Ende der Tage hingibt, während das abschließende ‚Noise Between Us‘ die ganze fatalistische Erhabenheit der Berliner Bowie-Ära hat, während die Band uns in die Leere lockt: „Into the edge, my love/Falling overboard. Die 2016 gegründete Band Avalanche Party - Jordan Bell (Gesang/Gitarre), Joe Bell (Bass/Gesang), Jared Thorpe (Gitarre/Sax/Gesang), Glen Adkins (Keyboards) und Kane Waterfield (Schlagzeug) - erklärt: „Niemand kommt von dort, wo wir herkommen. Die aus verschiedenen Ecken von North Yorkshire stammende Band wurde von den Brüdern Bell gegründet, die auf einem Bauernhof in der weitläufigen Heidelandschaft aufwuchsen, von ihren Eltern zu Hause unterrichtet wurden und von ihrem Vater Pete in die Gegenkultur eingeführt wurden, der in den späten 1960er Jahren Bassist im Beckenham Arts Lab war und neben Bowie und anderen Radikalen im Südosten Londons spielte. Avalanche Party vereinen ihre unverwechselbaren Stile (Waterfields knallhartes Schlagzeugspiel, Thorpes ausdrucksstarke Avant-Rock-Pyrotechnik, Joe Bells athletische Basslinien und Adkins' mitreißende Synthesizer) und erschaffen so einen Lärm, der ihre individuellen Einflüsse zu Formen verschmilzt und verdreht, die sich jeder eindeutigen Etikettierung entziehen. Die 2019er Debüt-LP 24 Carat Diamond Trephine ist als Abkehr von den „lauten, thrashigen“ Live-Performances gedacht, mit denen die Band erstmals auf sich aufmerksam machte, und bietet ein breites Spektrum an Stilen, das im Laufe der neununddreißig Minuten von frenetischem Garage-Psych über ruhigen, surrealistischen Americana bis hin zu stakkatoartigem, erhebendem Indierock reicht. Der Traum Über Alles ist dagegen ein durchdachteres, ausgereiftes Biest, dessen dunkle Schattenseite zweifellos darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass es während und nach der Isolation durch die COVID-19-Pandemie in dem Industriegebiet in Darlington und in dem Kellerstudio in Middlesbrough entstand, als die Beschränkungen gelockert wurden. Das mit Warhol'schen Stannioltapeten dekorierte Studio diente der Band ein Jahr lang als Nervenzentrum, während Thorpe und die Brüder Bell an ihren Ideen feilten, bevor sie im September 2022 durch eine außergewöhnliche Flut zur Flucht gezwungen wurden. Die Songs auf Der Traum Über Alles sind sehr direkt und unmittelbar. Viele von ihnen entstanden auf einer extrem simplen dreisaitigen Gitarre, die Jordan gebaut hatte, bevor die Band die LP schrieb. Indem er Lou Reeds Strauß-Stimmung adaptierte (jede Saite ist auf denselben Ton gestimmt, mit Oktavabstand), forderte Bell sich selbst heraus, das Instrument neu zu erlernen, wobei seine strengen Beschränkungen den Fluss neuer Ideen eher inspirierten als hemmten. Das überladene Dröhnen der Gitarre lässt den anderen Instrumenten Raum, sich in den Vordergrund zu schleichen und zu krallen, wie Joes Bass in „Collateral Damage“, der uns melodisch durch den industriellen Ansturm führt, oder Adkins' unheimliche Klavierlinien, die „Chainz“ in ein apokalyptisches Kabarett-Lied verwandeln. Formed in 2016, Avalanche Party – Jordan Bell (vocals/guitar), Joe Bell (bass/vocals), Jared Thorpe (guitar/sax/vocals), Glen Adkins (keys) and Kane Waterfield (drums) – have stated “nobody comes from where we come from”. Hailing from different corners of North Yorkshire, the band was put together by the brothers Bell, who were brought up on a farm on the sprawling moors, home-schooled by their parents and initiated into the counterculture by their father Pete, who in the late 1960s was resident bassist at Beckenham Arts Lab, playing alongside Bowie among other South East London radicals.
Blitzing together their distinctive styles (Waterfield’s hard-hitting, bouncing-bomb drumming; Thorpe’s expressive avant-rock pyrotechnics; Joe Bell’s athletic basslines; Adkins’ intoxicating synth), Avalanche Party create a noise that blends and twists their individual influences into shapes that defy any neat label. Intended as a deviation from the ‘loud, thrashy’ live performances that first got them noticed, the band’s 2019 debut LP ‘24 Carat Diamond Trephine’ spurts forth a spectrum of styles, leaping from frenetic garage-psych to sedate surrealistic Americana to staccato uplifting indie rock over the course of its thirty-nine minutes.
Forthcoming album ‘Der Traum Über Alles’, in contrast, is a more considered, full-formed beast, its dark underbelly undoubtedly a result of it being conceived during and after the caged-animal isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, on an industrial estate in Darlington and down in the basement studio they built in Middlesbrough once restrictions were eased. Decorated with Warholian tinfoil wallpaper, the studio served as a year-long nerve centre for the band while Thorpe and the brothers Bell pieced together their ideas, before a freak flood in September 2022 forced them to flee.
For all its urgency, the making of the LP required near-superhuman patience from the band. Recorded in November 2022 with Dave Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal) at Rancho de la Luna – his beautifully eccentric home studio on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, California – Avalanche Party were set to be there two years
before, but had to wait for the US border to reopen after repeated lockdowns Stateside. Swapping subterranean Teesside for this magical, hazardous desert landscape populated with rattlesnakes, scorpions and cholla cacti, the band recorded ‘Der Traum Über Alles’ in just ten days with Catching as their generous free-spirited pilot, his intimate knowledge of his vintage gear and Thanksgiving cooking sustaining the rapid-fire sessions. The idiosyncrasies of malfunctioning equipment (Jordan’s buzzing guitar, Jared’s deformed sax) were embraced as the band blazed through the songs, Catching’s laidback mastery of his own beaten-up equipment ensuring each track felt like a spontaneous eruption after so many months of suspended animation.
Catching’s generosity extended to introducing the band to Paul Frazer, who mixed the record. Having harnessed the intensity of such artists as IDLES, The Prodigy and Wilko Johnson, Frazer intuitively grasped how to magnify Avalanche Party’s energy on ‘Der Traum Über Alles’, creatively entertaining the most abstract of mixing suggestions – like Jordan’s notion that ‘Shake the Slack’ should burst forth like a lurking moray eel ambushing its prey.
Like the hallucinated Rudolf Nureyev ‘dancing all night long through the streets’ in ‘Nureyev Said it Best’, Avalanche Party offer the best possible solution to the strains, strife and superficiality of our times: to set yourself free with unbridled, rampant creativity. Witnessing the band live is like being present at an electrified possession ritual and, with ‘Der Traum Über Alles’, they have produced a propulsive soundtrack to their darkest reveries; an incendiary alternative to the mundanity and meaninglessness of modern life and its mass-manufactured culture; a riotous call to arms, urging you to cling to your dreams above all else.

A Deer A Horse
Die vier von A Deer A Horse überkommen uns wie eine Urgewalt. Mit ihren massiven Bassläufen, schweren Fuzz-Gitarren und nihilistischen Texten schleudern sie uns eine düstere Attitüde ins Gesicht, die sich musikalisch an einer Mischung aus Stoner-Rock, Noise-Rock, Doom und einem Hauch von Sludge-Metal ergötzt. Mit anderen Worten: A Deer A Horse findet man irgendwo in den Lücken zwischen Bands wie Melvins, Red Fang, Sleater-Kinney oder L7. This 4-piece band pushes you in the face with their bass runs, heavy fuzz guitars and plaintive as well as nihilistic lyrics with a sometime grim stoner attitude through a mix of doom-rock and a touch of sludge-metal. In other words: You can find A Deer A Horse probably in the gaps between such bands as Melvins, Red Fang, Sleater-Kinney or L7. Either way, this band delivers extremely compelling stuff. After a few singles and casettes, the 2022 debut album „Grind“, A DEER A HORSE released their 2nd album “Texas Math” on Rookie Records in September 2024. Recorded in Gojiars Silver Chord Studio in New York City, produced and mixed by the band and Jamie Uertz (Gojira, Anthrax).
