About this Event

Is Hope a Dangerous Word?

Hope is frequently touted as an essential ingredient for engaging in social action, energizing and inspiring a movement, and so becoming dangerous to the status quo.

But is that the whole story? Does hope sometimes become dangerous by letting people ‘off the hook’, hoping someone or something else will bring about the change? Can it get co-opted by those offering incremental change while preserving the status quo?

What happens when hopes are dashed, and deadlines and targets disappear in the rear view mirror? Is that the end of action, and hope dissolves into wishful thinking?

Hear from an activist, a sociologist-activist, and a theologian-philosopher, but mostly join the facilitated conversation.
