Caring Together: A Conversation on Family, Memory Care, and Support
Join us for an open dialogue exploring the vital role of professional respite care and ways to build a more dementia-friendly community. Respite care provides a critical, several-hour break for primary caregivers, offering families a moment to recharge while connecting individuals receiving care with a broader, supportive network.
Our Speakers
Barbara "Barb" Shefelton, M.Div., moved to Nellysford in January 2025 to become the Director of Blue Ridge Respite, a role she calls "the best job of her life." Her career spans serving as a Presbyterian Pastor, a Senior Chaplain, and a nationally certified healthcare Bioethicist. Driven by her personal experience navigating her father's Alzheimer's diagnosis, Barb became a passionate advocate for caregivers. She previously volunteered with the Alzheimer's Association, led specialized support groups, and trained hospital staff in Dementia Friendly programs to improve care practices.
In addition, we welcome Betsy from the Wintergreen - Nelson Community Paramedicine Program. Developed by Wintergreen Fire & Rescue, this specialized initiative is designed to improve local patient health management and reduce unnecessary emergency room visits throughout Nelson County and beyond. Come discover these essential community resources and learn how we can better care for one another.
