Event Description:
Join us for a celebration of science with the exhibition “The Marie Curies of the Mediterranean,” an inspiring exhibit showcasing the lives and achievements of female scientists and researchers across the Mediterranean region, and a special panel discussion..
“The Marie Curies of the Mediterranean,” has been exhibited across the globe and now arrives in Cleveland as part of the Cleveland Kurentovanje festival. The exhibit consists of 29 panels that feature female scientists and researchers from 22 countries, 19 of which are Mediterranean, who have received the prestigious Marie Curie fellowships from the European Union and/or contribute to it through their work.
The stories told in this exhibit span the scientists' lifetimes – showcasing their achievements and narrating their diverse backgrounds, different upbringings, personal interests, motivations, and paths throughout their careers, all thereby contributing to the recognition of scientific talent.
A panel discussion features Dr. Sabina Cveček, a Slovenian socio-cultural anthropologist who is also featured in the exhibition, Dr. Lydia Kisley a researcher and Assistant Professor of Physics and Chemistry, Case Western Reserve University, and members of Saint Martin de Porres High School. An interactive discussion will follow, with questions from the live and online audiences.
“I hope this exhibition inspires more women and persons from diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in science as well as to highlight the need for good mentorship and perseverance among early career researchers in pursuing our dreams,” says featured Slovenian scientist, Sabina Cveček.
“The Marie Curies of the Mediterranean” has been translated into nine languages and has been displayed in various countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. This global reach underscores the shared values and aspirations of the scientific community, inspiring younger generations and increase women’s visibility in science and research.
The exhibition was designed by the Marie Curie Alumni Association and El Caleidoscopio.
This event is made possible by The Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, and Saint Martin de Porres High School.
Selected Panelist Biographies:
Sabina Cveček, PhD is a socio-cultural anthropologist specializing in the interpretation of non-state social organization in eastern Mediterranean prehistory through an interdisciplinary perspective. She is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow at the Field Museum in Chicago and at the Austrian Archaeological Institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna.
Lydia Kisley, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University. She leads a lab which develops light microscopies to better understand materials used in medicine and industry. She also created the "Stories of Science in Cleveland Cultural Gardens" event series to inspire interest in STEM by connecting people to science through their personal heritage and local history.
