About this Event

SRH 1.208 Second floor event space, Benson Latin American Collection

This special event is a celebration of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) language and Sephardic culture. It features the renowned Mexican poet and novelist Myriam Moscona, known for her use of Ladino as a contemporary literary language, in a lively reading of Judeo-Spanish stories. Jacobo Sefamí, a scholar and writer based at UC-Irvine, will accompany Myriam. The reading will be followed by a performance of Sephardic music and refreshments.

It is open to the public and should be of interest to everyone from experts in the subject to newcomers who would like to become acquainted with the language and enjoy some mesmerizing Sephardic music.

The program is in Spanish and Ladino. If you know Spanish, you should be able to follow along easily.

Myriam Moscona, a Mexican poet and novelist from a Bulgarian-Sephardic family background, after establishing herself as a Spanish-language writer, in mid-career began to use Ladino or Judeo-Spanish as a contemporary literary language. Moscona's semiautobiographical novel of 2012, Tela de sevoya, introduces the reader to many Ladino phrases through a voyage to retrace her Sephardic roots, while her 2015 book of poetry, Ansina, is composed predominantly in Judeo-Spanish. Moscona is also the co-editor, with Jacobo Sefamí of an anthology of Ladino writing, Por mi boka: Textos de la Diáspora Sefardí en Ladino.

Jacobo Sefamí, the grandson of Sephardic Jews who emigrated from Turkey and Syria to Mexico, received his Ph.D. from UT-Austin. He is currently a professor at UC Irvine. His books include Contemporary Spanish American Poets (1992), El espejo trizado: la poesía de Gonzalo Rojas (1992), De la imaginación poética: Conversaciones con Gonzalo Rojas, Olga Orozco, Alvaro Mutis y José Kozer (1996), Medusario. Muestra de poesía latinoamericana (co-editor, 1996), La voracidad grafómana: José Kozer (editor, 2002). He co-edited, with Myriam Moscona, Por mi boka: Textos de la Diáspora Sefardí en Ladino (T2013); and, with Matthias Lehmann, The Jewish Experience in Mexico (2018). He has also published a novel, Los dolientes (2004),
