About this Event
A Bug’s Life
Beneath the lush, sun-dappled blades of an island meadow lies a thriving ant colony, living in perpetual fear. Every season, they must gather a massive offering of food for their tyrannical overlords, a biker gang of grasshoppers led by the menacing Hopper. Enter Flik, an earnest but hopelessly inventive ant whose latest blunder destroys the entire offering. To save his colony, he sets off on a quest to recruit "bigger bugs" to be warriors—only to mistakenly bring back a troupe of down-on-their-luck circus insects. What unfolds is not just a story of underdogs versus bullies, but a brilliant, witty, and visually stunning fable about community, deception, and the power of ideas.
Often overshadowed by its blockbuster cousin Toy Story, A Bug's Life is a masterpiece of storytelling in its own right. As the second feature from Pixar Animation Studios, it represents a monumental leap in technical ambition, creating an entire world at a microscopic scale. But its true genius lies in its narrative. It’s a savvy re-imagining of Aesop’s fable "The Ant and the Grasshopper" filtered through the lens of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (and its Western remake, The Magnificent Seven). It’s a film about collective action, the critique of feudal systems, and the courage to challenge the status quo—all dressed in the vibrant colors of a child’s adventure.
Listen for the brilliant voice cast, including Dave Foley as Flik, Kevin Spacey as the chilling Hopper, and the legendary Phyllis Diller as the Queen. Watch for the meticulous details: the use of seeds, leaves, and trash as artifacts of the bug civilization, and the stunning rainstorm sequence—a technical marvel in 1998.
