About this Event
Tracing the line from West Africa to the American South, this event explores how two isolated communities —the Gullah/Geechee of the Sea Islands and the quiltmakers of Gees Bend, Alabama— carried and transformed African traditions into new cultural expressions through shear resilience. The brunch menu highlights Gullah/Geechee dishes with deep roots in West African cooking traditions. Prior to the meal service, guests will create individual quilt squares - no sewing required - inspired by Gees Bend's geometric designs reminiscence of West African textile traditions. A seamstress will unit these squares into a single community quilt, creating a lasting artifact that grows with each event and builds a visual legacy connecting Africa, the American South, and our shared table.
Menu: Black eye pea fritters / grilled watermelon salad w/ watermelon rind relish & arugula / shrimp & grits / chess pie / benne wafers
