A Better Life for Their Children is a powerful traveling exhibit that tells the story of the Rosenwald Schools. The Rosenwald Schools were the result of a groundbreaking partnership between Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears, Roebuck & Company, and Booker T. Washington, renowned educator and founder of The Tuskegee Institute. More than 5,000 schools, shops, and teacher homes were built across the segregated South between 1912 and 1937 to educate African American children. Together, they developed a matching grant program that required local African American communities to contribute money, land, and labor toward the construction of their schools. Created by photographer Andrew Feiler, this exhibition features 23 black-and-white photographs of Rosenwald Schools across the country as they exist today. Each image is paired with a brief narrative by Feiler, telling stories that connect the Rosenwald legacy to pivotal moments in American history, including the Trail of Tears, the Great Migration, the Tuskegee Airmen, and Brown v. Board of Education. Together, the photographs and narratives from cities and towns throughout the South reveal the schoolhouses and the people for whom they meant so much.
