A 9/11 25th Anniversary Community Commemoration: Making Space to Remember and Share
Advertisement
Please consider making space in your day to join us to pause and honor the memory of those lost to us on 9/11 and as a result of the aftermath of the attacks.
The sharing will begin with a brief period of silent reflection. Then we’ll awaken our memories by making a list of the various places we were when we heard news of the attacks (i.e. in my car driving to work, in line getting my morning coffee, etc), followed by how we found out about them (i.e. TV, radio, a friend called me, etc.). We’ll follow that by opening the floor to story sharing surrounding that day and how you view it 25 years later.
GUIDELINES FOR STORY SHARING:
In the tradition of The Moth (themoth.org), we ask that you share stories "from a scar, not a wound": We seek your thoughtful interpretations of your emotions, not simply the raw emotions; we seek stories that help us heal, not that harm anyone in any way.
Please keep your story to 4 minutes (we’ll let you know at 3.5 minutes to wrap it up). If you plan to share your remembrance, please practice it at least once and get a rough timing.
This gathering is intended to honor the memory of those killed on 9/11 and as a result of 9/11 and to reflect on how we view the event 25 years later. As tempting as it may be, this gathering is not meant to be a place to give voice to the political moment we find ourselves in.
It is not required, but it is most helpful if you can e-mail or call The Exchange ahead of time if you intend to share. This doesn’t mean you can’t share if you haven’t registered, but we’ll prioritize those who have and we will not exceed the 8:30 p.m. end time. You can reach The Exchange at [email protected] and 570-317-2596.

The event organizers gratefully acknowledge partnership with September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows -- an organization founded by family members of those killed on September 11th who have united to turn their grief into action for peace. By developing and advocating nonviolent options and actions in the pursuit of justice, they hope to break the cycles of violence engendered by war and terrorism. Acknowledging their common experience with all people affected by violence throughout the world, they work to create a safer and more peaceful world for everyone.
