The Oxnard College Theatre Department is proud to present “9 One-Act Plays” — student written, student stories. The inaugural performances of what is slated to be a yearly tradition will be at 7pm on March 19th, 20th, and 21st with one matinee performance at 2pm on March 21st.
The performances are sure to be filled with laughs, gasps, revelations, and drama. These plays will be timely and personal as the plays featured are all written and directed by our very own students and faculty.
Plays included in the performance:
An Affair of Honor
Written by Nicholas C. Pappas and Directed by Mateo Ordonez
Synopsis: Two bumbling buffoons, Milner and Haberdasher, who wish to K*ll each other in a duel over stupid reasons. Accompanied by their seconds; Couturier, Tailor, and a Doctor, the two men decide to duel. Despite their murderous intentions, they fail to K*ll one another for quite some time, resulting in a darkly comedic spectacle of incompetence and rage.
Almost Sisters
Written and Directed by Melyssa Oakley
Synopsis: Stepsisters Isa and Jackie must find a way to move forward from past pains while also trying to help Isa move past this life and into the next one.
A Break
Written by Brooke Hernandez and Directed by Nicholas C. Pappas
Synopsis: “A Break” is a story following Chloe, a piano teacher, and her student Fernando. They both are in dire need of a break from the pain their mothers have caused. Watch as the pain gets too unbearable that Fernando can’t play the piano. Will Chloe be able to help Fernando learn how to play the piano without causing too much commotion?
Fair Trade
Written by Syg Tanner and Directed by Rogelio Lara
Synopsis: A sly woman has sealed a deadly debt with a vengeful spirit. She cannot afford the price of their bargain and must save herself at all costs, because the monster has come to collect.
Monstrare
Written by Rogelio Lara and Directed by Melyssa Oakley & Nicholas C. Pappas
Synopsis: Sera and Diego are the two lead detectives of the Monstrare detective agency. On the night Sera decides to call it quits, they get a visit from a little girl who believes her mother is a werewolf.
Road K*ll
Written and Directed by Morgan Sale
Synopsis: Two sisters on a road trip, fueled by years apart, attempt to reconnect, but struggle to navigate who they once were and who they are now. Expect some light traffic on the road.
Snickerdoodles
Written and Directed by Davis Jackson
Synopsis: Blake and Liv don't seem to have a lot in common... at first. One thing that they do share is a love of food. To be more specific... Snickerdoodles. It is that love that brings them closer.
Table Talk
Written and Directed by Dan Lisi
Synopsis: Olivia invites Mark over to her place for a homemade dinner. While trying to get Mark out of his comfort zone, miscommunication occurs. During dinner they learn more about each other and bring their relationship to a new level.
The Way, The Truth, and The Light
Written and Directed by Paris De La Huerta
Synopsis: Alexa, a 24 year-old female writer, decides to go to a Christian women’s retreat a week before her wedding for a spiritual awakening. Alexa has spent her entire life in the church, and Christianity has established itself as a main theme in her writings. These writings have even landed her a spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list. When Alexa meets Amanda, a 24 year-old lesbian cook at the retreat, she is forced to confront parts of herself that she had buried deep long ago, putting the future of her writing career at stake as her belief system crumbles
All performances will be in the beautiful Oxnard College Performing Arts Building’s Black Box theatre.
Tickets: $11 dollars for credit card or cash at the door. You may also purchase your tickets online in advance.
