The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) need to collect a lot of tax debt from taxpayers each financial year in Australia (currently, say A$76 billion in 2023/24 and per the 2023 ATO Annual Report. Some A$26 billion is disputed tax debt or uncollectable tax debt).

In 2024, the ATO continue to use Director Penalty Notices (DPNs) to collect tax debts from certain types of Australian taxpayers. This case study of a tax dispute involving DPNs issued to a director of a company will demonstrate how directors of companies can become liable to the PAYG, GST and Superannuation debts of a company without proper planning and advice.

Brett has more than 30 years’ experience providing business and taxation advisory services to a range of clients including multinational corporations, private clients, SME businesses including property developers.

Brett is a Director in our Taxation Services group based in our Sydney office.

Brett’s passion is providing tax advice to see his clients succeed in business and generate wealth. Brett advises taxpayers in all areas of taxation, including income tax, international tax, capital gains tax, FBT, GST and state duties, payroll taxes and land tax.

Brett is a seasoned conference presenter but has also dedicated a significant portion of his career to educating young professional accountants and lawyers about the role of taxation in the Australian economy. More recently, Brett serves as an adjunct academic at the University of Technology (UTS), Sydney.
