Peace Gathering to Commemorate the 81st Anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
When: Sunday, August 2, 2026, 2PM-2:45PM
Where: In front of the New York Public Library (42nd Street and Fifth Avenue)
What:
Eighty-one years have passed since the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is estimated that the bombs killed 210,000 people by the end of 1945 and, over the years, have ruined the health of many of the survivors. In Japan, the average age of the hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, is now 86 years old, and many of them are still suffering from terrible health issues.
Korean Atomic Bomb Victims have uniquely faced the triple evils of nuclear violence, war, and colonialism for the past eight decades. Hundreds of thousands of Koreans were forcibly displaced to Japan under imperial occupation during the Second World War, and, as victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, have faced marginalization in their own communities.
We stand in solidarity with these victims in calling for accountability from the United States government, and a commitment to nuclear disarmament.
To honor the memory of those who lost their lives to the atomic bombings, a coalition of people and peace activists will gather in front of the New York Public Library on Sunday, August 2, at 2PM.
There we will join our voices to express our sincere regrets and apologies for our nations’ atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
