About this Event

Fork() /The Patriarchy/

Location: Westerville Public Library, Meeting Room B

Topic Overview:

In software development, a project fork is useful when an old system no longer meets new user requirements. The fork is created so that inefficient and broken code can be cleared away to make space for an improved implementation. Forking implies not just a branch in the development, but a divergence from the original system. Let’s talk about some real world systems that need to be forked, and how you can start forking the patriarchy in particular.

Warning: This talk is intended for professional women in computing and may contain bad words and gestures.

Speaker Bio

Bettina Bair was a full-time lecturer at Ohio State University, teaching CSE, until 2021. Prior to that, she worked in industry for nearly 20 years. This combination of real-world and academic experience has given her a unique and valuable perspective on the role of technology in business and society. Bettina was consistently one of the top-rated instructors at OSU, and she received recognition for Teaching Excellence in 2020. She has received many awards for her work encouraging the recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented minorities in computer science. Bettina has created computer science content for TED-ED, and authored several research papers and articles highlighting the gender imbalance in computing. Bettina thinks forking the patriarchy is hilarious, and necessary now more than ever.
