6-Week Introduction to Horology Course

Have you ever wondered what makes a mechanical clock tick, how different escapements work, or why European and American clocks developed such distinctive styles?
Join local clock enthusiast Colin Boyd for a friendly and accessible six-week introduction to horology. Designed for beginners and anyone with a curiosity about clocks, the course combines history, practical knowledge and plenty of fascinating examples from the world of timekeeping.
Over six sessions, we’ll explore how clocks evolved, what happens inside a movement, how different types of clocks work, and some of the basic tools and techniques used in clock repair.
1. Introduction & History (19th October)
An introduction to horology and the story of mechanical timekeeping — from early clocks through to the development of the technologies that transformed how we measure time.
2. The Basics: Movements & Escapements (26th October)
Discover what makes a mechanical clock work. We’ll look at the main components of a movement and explore the fascinating role of the escapement in controlling the release of energy and keeping time.
3. European & American Clocks (2nd November)
Explore the distinctive traditions of clockmaking across Europe and America, looking at different designs, movements, makers and the historical influences that shaped them.
4. Simple Repairs & Tools (9th November)
A practical introduction to the tools and techniques used in clock repair. We’ll discuss common problems, basic maintenance and what to consider before attempting a repair yourself.
5. Electric Clocks (16th November)
Explore the transition from mechanical to electrical timekeeping, including the development of electric clocks, how they work and their place in the history of horology.
6. Special Guest: David Thompson (23rd November)
We’re delighted to welcome David Thompson, former Curator of Horology at the British Museum for a special session bringing his extensive knowledge and experience of clocks and horology to the course.
No previous knowledge or experience is required. Whether you already collect clocks, have inherited a family timepiece, enjoy repairing things, or simply want to understand more about the fascinating mechanisms behind them, this course offers an ideal introduction.

Studio Kind is situated at the far end of and within Barnstaple Pannier Market. During out of hours, the market can be accessed by a small wooden door from Butchers Row.
Nearest Car parks are the Cattle Market car park or Barnstaple Central. There is disabled parking on Boutport Street.
The bus station is a 5-minute walk away and the train station a 15-minute walk or bus journey of 10 minutes.
Our venue is wheelchair friendly and accessible to all. There are accessible toilets right next door.
