About this Event

Due to a growing need, healthcare providers and community members are entering the memory care market. To stand out, you must distinguish yourself, and your staff with the skills necessary to provide exceptional care with impeccable standards.

This Basic Level, 6-hour educational event will give professional learners the knowledge to impact the quality of life for those living with dementia.

This class meets the basic requirements by the Indiana State Department of Health for dementia training for all direct care staff.

Dates:

  • Tuesday March 4, 2025- Session 1
  • Tuesday March 11, 2025- Session 2
  • Tuesday March 18, 2025- Session 3
  • Tuesday March 25, 2025- Session 4
  • Tuesday April 1, 2025- Session 5
  • Tuesday April 8, 2025- Session 6

Time: 9:00 am - 10:00 am EST for all events

Topics will include:

  • Alzheimer's and Dementia 101
  • Communication: The Essence of Relationship
  • Behavioral Expressions: Respond -vs- React
  • Joining their Journey- Person Centered Care
  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Abuse in Dementia Care: Identify, Respond, and Prevent

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify dementia and symptoms of dementia
  • Recognize reversible and non-reversible dementia
  • Give examples of common Dementia Diseases
  • Recognize Alzheimer's Disease
  • Label (3) three common types of Alzheimer's Disease
  • Identify Retrogenesis
  • Describe common neurological deficits
  • Identify how we communicate
  • Recognize the kind of communication that is essential for care
  • Relate how communication is so important for expert care
  • Identify communication styles that do not work and can cause distress
  • Explain communication styles that do work for best care.
  • Identify how being a care partner has a "ripple effect" through communication styles
  • Differentiate between responding and reacting
  • Analyze where your clients are along their journey of dementia
  • Identify helpful care partner approaches
  • Identify what it means to join your clients journey
  • Recognize why providing special care is important
  • List ways you can build on your clients strengths and not weakness
  • Give examples of ways you can support your clients.
  • Identify what an ADL- Activity of Daily Living is, and why it is so important for clients.
  • Recognize common factors that can influence ADL abilities
  • Recognize and identify each person's abilities and needs.
  • Recognize and honor each of your clients independent skills
  • Evaluate facts regarding prevalence of elder abuse
  • Identify the definition of abuse and name (8) eight forms of abuse
  • Recognize how to respond to abuse, including reporting
  • Recognize how abuse may be prevented- Caregiver burnout


Individuals must attend all six (6) live interactive audio/ video seminars, and complete six (6) online competency quizzes and evaluations which will be sent to the email address listed during registration. Participants have up to five (5) working days to complete both quiz and evaluations for each session. Participants will receive their CE / certificate of participation after they attend the six (6) live interactive audio/ video seminars, AND completed all six (6) competency quizzes and evaluations. The webinar will not be recorded.

HFA and Social Work CE's will be available.

The Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, #1713, is approved to offer social worker continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. The Institute for Excellence in Memory Care maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 06/14/2023-04/16-2026). Social Workers participating in this course will receive 6.0 General continuing education credits.

The Institute for Excellence in Memory Care/ Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana (98001107A) has been approved by the Indiana State Board of Health Facility Administrators to provide 6.0 General CEUs for this event.
