A Sydney Rare Book Week event.
The invention of the printing press allowed the Protestant Reformers (and its detractors) to spread their message widely. Being “people of the book”, Christians have embraced books in all their forms, from highly ornamental tomes to cheap pamphlets. Take a closer look at books from the past 500 years of printing and bookbinding—a work printed on Gutenberg’s own press, Luther’s “Flugschriften”, elaborate Bibles, subversive tracts, and books from Australia’s convict past. See—and touch—examples of the full range of historic bindings, from gilt-tooled goatskin to Pacific tapa cloth. All from the Donald Robinson Library’s extraordinary Rare Books collection.
