The Prairie du Chien Historical Society invites the public to a free presentation led by Dale Klemme on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the Prairie du Chien Art Center. The program will explore the story of the Fourth Ward on St. Feriole Island and its relocation following the devastating floods of 1965 and 1967. As part of what became the first—and still the only—100% U.S. Army Corps of Engineers non-structural flood control project, approximately 160 homes and structures were moved or removed, and by the early 1980s the former residential neighborhood had been transformed into today’s 240-acre public park preserving the island’s historic sites.
Former radio voice of Prairie du Chien, Norb Aschom, will help frame the story of this unique and historic undertaking. Through local insight and firsthand perspective, the program will reflect on both the challenges and the lasting legacy of this unprecedented community effort.
