It’s Time to Celebrate the Life & Legacy of Dr. King!
For 40 years, Syracuse University has celebrated the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This historic event started in 1986 before Congress recognized King with a federal holiday honoring his memory and accomplishments. In this historic year of celebration and remembering, we are grateful to welcome Smith College president, Sarah Willie-LeBreton. President Willie-Le-Breton is the daughter of Dr. Charles Willie G’57, H’92, SU’s first Black full professor and good friend to Dr. King. We will also be honoring the late dean of Hendricks Chapel, Dick Phillips, who was integral in the establishment of the University’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on campus in the mid-1980s.
In this 40th year, we are excited to announce that the dinner and program will be combined this year, participants will stay in their seats rather than move to the upper levels of the Dome. The evening will include a conversation with President Sarah Willie-LeBreton, the Unsung Hero Awards, performances by the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble and Cora Thomas’s community choir, a traditional dinner featuring new dishes and recipes, and special art experiences on the main floor.
