400 Years Underground: Discover Ribera del Duero’s Wine Legacy
A family that helped create Ribera del Duero. A 16th-century underground wine cellar. Five Spanish wines. One extraordinary evening.
A PERSONAL JOURNEY I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU
Over the years, I've had the privilege of visiting wineries, meeting passionate people, and discovering the stories behind some remarkable wines.
But some experiences stay with you.
My visit to Bodegas Ismael Arroyo – ValSotillo in Ribera del Duero was one of them.
It was a fascinating learning experience, not simply because of the wines, but because of the extraordinary history of the Arroyo family and the underground cellars that have preserved their winemaking tradition for centuries.
What impressed me most was learning about Ismael Arroyo, a man who believed in his region long before Ribera del Duero became internationally famous.
He wasn't just another winemaker.
He was one of the people who helped put Ribera del Duero on the wine map.
I came away with a greater appreciation for the family, their vineyards, and the incredible patience behind traditional Spanish winemaking.
And I thought: This is exactly the kind of experience I want to share with our customers at Happy Wine Calle Ocho.
So, on Tuesday, November 3, from 7–9 PM, I invite you to discover five Spanish wines, including four expressions from this historic producer.
THE MAN WHO HELPED CREATE RIBERA DEL DUERO
Here's something many wine lovers don't know.
In the 1970s, Ribera del Duero was not yet the internationally celebrated wine region we know today.
Much of its wine was sold in bulk. Vineyards were disappearing, and the region's future was uncertain.
Ismael Arroyo believed things could be different.
In 1979, together with his family, he established Bodegas Ismael Arroyo and began bottling wines under the ValSotillo name.
He then joined a small group of pioneering growers and winemakers who fought to establish the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin in 1982.
ValSotillo was among its six founding private wineries.
Before Ribera del Duero became a legend, Ismael Arroyo was helping write its story.
Today, his family's legacy continues.
THE SECRET BENEATH THE VILLAGE
Imagine a cathedral built not above the ground, but beneath it.
Deep below Sotillo de la Ribera lies the family's remarkable underground cellar, carved into rock beginning in the 16th century.
Its historic galleries extend approximately 400 meters, reaching depths of up to 30 meters.
The temperature remains naturally around 11–12°C (52–54°F) throughout the year.
No artificial spectacle. Just stone, darkness, silence, oak barrels, and centuries of winemaking knowledge.
These conditions help ValSotillo's wines mature slowly and naturally.
This isn't just a historic cellar. It's still part of the winemaking process.
And the family's vineyards, averaging approximately 60 years of age, contribute another essential ingredient: the character of old-vine Tempranillo.
FIVE WINES. FIVE STORIES. ONE LEGENDARY REGION.
Our tasting begins with a traditional Spanish white grape before moving into four expressions of Ribera del Duero.
Each wine offers something different to discover.
1. RAÍCES ALBILLO — Castilla y León
Grape: Albillo
Region: Castilla y León, Spain
Style: Spanish white wine
We're starting with something unexpected.
Spain is famous for its reds, but its historic white grape varieties deserve attention too.
Albillo introduces a different side of Spanish winemaking, offering a wonderful contrast before we explore the reds of Ribera del Duero.
Why taste it? To discover a traditional Spanish white grape that many wine lovers have never experienced.
2. VALSOTILLO 2021 — Ribera del Duero
Grape: Tempranillo, locally called Tinta del País
Region: Ribera del Duero, Spain
Our introduction to ValSotillo's signature grape.
This is where we begin exploring the character of Tempranillo grown in the heart of Ribera del Duero.
Look for the relationship between fruit, freshness, tannins, and the influence of the region's vineyards.
Why taste it? To establish the foundation before comparing the winery's more mature and structured expressions.
3. VALSOTILLO CRIANZA 2019 — Ribera del Duero
Grape: 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo)
Aging: 12 months in French and American oak
Accolade: 93 Points — Vivir el Vino, 2024 Guide
Now the story becomes more interesting.
Crianza introduces the influence of time and oak, developing complexity while maintaining the character of Tempranillo.
Expect ripe fruit, spice, integrated oak, and a satisfying finish.
Why taste it? To understand what traditional Crianza aging contributes to Ribera del Duero.
4. VALSOTILLO FINCA BUENAVISTA 2019 — Ribera del Duero
Grape: 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo)
Vineyard altitude: Approximately 850 meters
Aging: 6 months in French and American oak
Accolade: 92 Points — Vivir el Vino, 2024 Guide
Finca Buenavista introduces the importance of vineyard location.
The grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine matures in oak barrels inside the historic underground cellar.
Expect red fruit, spice, hints of licorice, and a balanced expression of Tempranillo.
Why taste it? To discover how vineyard altitude, grape selection, and careful aging influence a wine's personality.
5. VALSOTILLO RESERVA 2020 — Ribera del Duero
Grape: 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo)
Aging: 24 months in French and American oak, followed by at least 12 months in bottle
And now, our grand finale.
Reserva is where patience becomes part of the wine's character.
Extended aging develops complexity, texture, and harmony.
Expect dark fruit, refined spice, subtle earthy notes, and a long, elegant finish.
Why taste it? To experience how time transforms Tempranillo and understand why traditional Reserva wines hold such an important place in Spanish wine culture.
