Introducing David Bence
David Bence is a photo-based artist born in Flushing, New York, in 1955, and raised in Michigan and Indiana. He currently lives and works in Vero Beach, Florida. Growing up, David’s close-knit family included his mother, a multi-disciplined artist, father, and his two brothers. His photographic practice draws on these early experiences, his education, and his tenure as an Art Director with large advertising agencies in the Detroit area.
He earned an Associate Degree in Filmmaking from the Brooks Institute School of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, as an Honor Student; and a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, with an Indiana State Talent Scholarship. As both a life-long learner and teacher, he has also attended photography workshops with John Sexton and Howard Bond and taught photography in Continuing Education programs in Bloomfield Hills and Troy, Michigan.
His work has been exhibited in various galleries, including SE Center for Photography in Greenville, SC, where he was included in the Black, White and Monochrome, Composed, at PhotoPlace Gallery, in Middlebury, VT. His work has also been included in museums exhibitions, including Through the Eye of the Camera at A.E. Backus Museum in Fort Pierce, FL, The 2021 Photography Biennial, in Oberlin, OH, at Firelands Association for the Visual Arts, and Treasure Coast Creates: A Tribute to Local Artists, at the Vero Beach Museum of Art in Vero Beach, Fl. His work is also included in the permanent collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Most recently, he was featured in the October 2024 issue of “Black & White Magazine”.
